SILENT SUN SPLATTER
Selection of photographs and videos by Louis Braddock Clarke

In collaboration with the Recontemporary Foundation of Turin, the CRAG – Chiono Reisova Art Gallery is pleased to host a selection of works by photographer and videomaker Louis Braddock Clarke on Friday, 5 September 2025, at its headquarters in Via Parma 66D, Turin.

Braddock’s work was presented by Recontemporary last February in the artist’s first solo exhibition in Italy, entitled Tomorrow Will Be Louder, in collaboration with SEEYOUSOUND and curated by Alessandro Maccarone, after his debut at the 2023 Venice Biennale and numerous international exhibitions. The exhibition imagines a space where we can become intimate with our sound ecology, visualising new terrestrial scenarios through sounds and images.

Louis Braddock Clarke, a young and talented British artist and researcher, creates his works with an interest in art, geography, physics, geology and esoteric philosophy, strongly influenced by the places of his youth in Cornwall, a context where nature and human intervention are in stark contrast between peat bogs, tin mines, underground energy tangles and transatlantic cables.

The CRAG Gallery will host works from the SILENT SUN SPLATTER series, photographs taken in analogue format within a volcanic network of the Triple Junction in the Atlantic. This intersection of deep geological time moves in three directions: 40° North 22.9 mm/year, 38° North 19.8 mm/year, East 2.2 mm/year. Between these plates extend a series of mobile tubes that descend into the Earth’s mantle, markers of time, listening sites for the outside world and areas of chemical reactions. Through a combination of metals, bacteria, calcium water, human contamination and humidity, the tubes are illuminated by a “biological film” and these hidden places become new and incredible landscapes.
Using a mixture of “Bio-Film” and metals from the depths of the Earth, medium-format negatives are exposed to these earthly “delights”. Each negative is immersed in different time scales of chemical formulas, all dictated and produced by the action and movement of the Earth.
Colours, exposure, shutter speed, development time and composition are elements produced analogically by geological matter at -544 metres below the triple junction.

The film UNDER BOOM, made in the same volcano that becomes a geological ear, will also be shown in the exhibition. In it, we can hear infrasounds coming from the movements of ice, the songs of cetaceans, air strikes and other natural or artificial interactions that occur on Earth.

The CRAG Gallery enthusiastically hosts this project, delighted with Recontemporary’s collaborative proposal, inviting visitors to let themselves be transported into this world that is seemingly so imperceptible, yet so close to us, which will be better described during the talk with the artist at the opening (Friday 5 September at 6 pm).

Louis Clarke Braddock.

A lecturer at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, he has won numerous awards for his projects: Waag Technology Award 2019, Dutch Talent Award in 2020, Landscape Research Award 2021, Gouden Kalf in 2022. His works and installations have been exhibited internationally in major galleries and festivals, including: Rencontres Internationales, Venice Biennale, NTMoFA, Sonic Acts, Rewire, Sounds of Silence, Netherlands Film Festival, FILE Brazil, Digital Arts Taipei, Centre Wallonie Bruxelles, Macau Design Museum, MU Hybrid Art House, W139, OT301, Loods6 Quartair, Stroom, Museum of Mines and Metal Brazil, WEST Museum, Noorderlicht, Het Hem, and reviewed by magazines such as CLOT, WIRE, DAMN, AQNB.

Opening venerdì 5 settembre ore 17/21

In collaborazione con la Fondazione Recontemporary di Torino, la Galleria CRAG – Chiono Reisova Art Gallery è lieta di ospitare una selezione di opere del fotografo e videomaker Louis Braddock Clarke venerdì 5 settembre 2025 nella sua sede di via Parma 66D di Torino.

 Il lavoro di Braddock è stato presentato da Recontemporary lo scorso febbraio nella prima mostra personale dell’artista in Italia, intitolata Tomorrow Will Be Louder, in collaborazione con SEEYOUSOUND e curata da Alessandro Maccarone, dopo l’esordio alla Biennale di Venezia 2023 e numerose esposizioni internazionali. Nella mostra viene immaginato uno spazio in cui possiamo entrare in intimità con la nostra ecologia sonora, visualizzando nuovi scenari terrestri attraverso i suoni e le immagini.

Louis Braddock Clarke, giovane e talentuoso artista e ricercatore britannico, realizza i suoi lavori con interesse rivolto all’arte, alla geografia, alla fisica, alla geologia e filosofia esoterica, fortemente influenzato dai luoghi della sua gioventù in Cornovaglia, contesto dove natura e intervento dell’uomo sono in stretto contrasto tra torbiere, miniere di stagno, grovigli energetici sotterranei e cavi transatlantici.

La Galleria CRAG ospiterà opere della serie SILENT SUN SPLATTER, fotografie scattate in formato analogico all’interno di una rete vulcanica della Tripla Giunzione nell’Atlantico. Questa intersezione del tempo geologico profondo si muove in 3 direzioni: 40° Nord 22,9 mm/anno, 38° Nord 19,8 mm/anno, Est 2,2 mm/anno. Tra queste placche si estendono una serie di tubi mobili che scendono nel mantello terrestre, marcatori del tempo, siti di ascolto del mondo esterno e zone di reazioni chimiche. Attraverso una combinazione di metalli, batteri, acqua calcica, contaminazione umana e umidità, i tubi sono illuminati da una “pellicola biologica” e questi luoghi così nascosti diventano nuovi e incredibili paesaggi.

Utilizzando una miscela di “Bio-Film” e metalli delle profondità terrestri, i negativi di medio formato vengono esposti a queste “delizie” terrene. Ogni negativo è immerso in diverse scale temporali di formule chimiche, tutte dettate e prodotte dall’azione e dal movimento della Terra.

Colori, esposizione, velocità di otturazione, tempo di sviluppo e composizione sono elementi prodotti analogicamente dalla materia geologica a -544 metri sotto la tripla giunzione.

Verrà riproposto in mostra anche il film UNDER BOOM, realizzato nello stesso vulcano che diventa orecchio geologico, nel quale possiamo sentire infrasuoni che arrivano dai movimenti dei ghiacci, canti dei cetacei, attacchi aerei e altre interazioni naturali o artificiali che intervengono sulla Terra.

La Galleria CRAG ospita con entusiasmo questo progetto, lieta della proposta collaborativa di Recontemporary, con l’invito a lasciarsi trasportare in questo mondo apparentemente così impercettibile, ma di fatto così vicino a noi, che meglio ci verrà descritto in occasione del talk con l’artista, durante l’opening (venerdì 5 settembre ore 18).
