The CRAG Gallery, in the new headquarters in via Parma 66D in Turin, inaugurates the exhibition of the Milanese artist Matteo Negri (1982) from 18 May to 30 June 2023.
QUESTIONING THE SPACE to find time is the title of the solo exhibition which includes a selection of the latest works from the Meanwhile series made on steel and aluminium, works on paper and an unprecedented installation that welcomes the visitor to the gallery. The artist, trained in sculpture at the Brera Academy, has developed over the last ten years a research which, starting from elementary shapes and colors, investigates the changing relationship between matter and the perception that our senses have of it.
The fulcrum of this Turin project are the works of the Meanwhile series: reflective and colored sheets with which the artist makes the visitor an integral part of the work through interaction with it.
The realization of the works is long and complex and involves several phases. It starts from the drawings on paper, on which the artist intervenes with acrylic sprays and chalks: they are the study of plane geometries that overlap and create formal and chromatic balances.
Subsequently, these geometries are reported on aluminum bases and painted with spray backgrounds. It is in this phase that the use of iridescent adhesive films begins, which are chosen according to the gradation and tonality, applied creating different levels of color saturation and mirroring surfaces. At this point the transparent dichroic film is applied, a material capable of changing color based on the angle at which the light arrives from the environment. The last finishing level is the hot painting with glossy transparent epoxy paint, which creates a homogeneous and uniform mirror surface.
The result is unexpected, seductive and unsettling: the colors of the backgrounds vary according to the position from which the visitor observes the works. Thus a dialogue is created between object and observer, in which the latter is dragged into the space dilated by the artist, into his pieces of this world. The titles of these works indicate the time and date in which Negri made a visual note (a photograph taken with his cell phone) of a particular situation in which shapes and lights interacted in a significant way. Skies, mountains, rivers and landscapes in general. The individual works try to evoke the poetry of those moments, proposing them to the viewer months or years later in a different spatial context. Thus the geometries and chromatic variations that take place in the gallery space relate memory and the passage of time.
Finally, in this exhibition, Negri uses the language of flags for the first time. Banners that, instead of representing nations or regions, reproduce the typical geometries of his language. The installation reproduces a sort of entrance to a diplomatic office, where flags of imaginary countries are displayed, of which one can become free citizens thanks to the imagination. Once again the artist invites us to be part of his work.

La Galleria CRAG, nella nuova sede di via Parma 66D a Torino, inaugura la mostra dell’artista milanese Matteo Negri (1982) dal 18 maggio al 30 giugno 2023.
INTERROGARE LO SPAZIO per trovare il tempo è il titolo della personale che comprende una selezione degli ultimi lavori della serie Meanwhile realizzati su acciaio e alluminio, opere su carta ed un’inedita installazione che accoglie il visitatore in galleria. L’artista, formatosi in scultura all’Accademia di Brera, ha sviluppato negli ultimi dieci anni una ricerca che, a partire da forme e colori elementari, indaga il rapporto cangiante tra la materia e la percezione che di essa hanno i nostri sensi.
Fulcro di questo progetto torinese sono le opere della serie Meanwhile: lamiere specchianti e colorate con le quali l’artista rende il visitatore parte integrante dell’opera attraverso l’interazione con essa.
La realizzazione delle opere è lunga e complessa e comporta più fasi. Si parte dai disegni su carta, sui quali l’artista interviene con spray acrilico e gessetti: sono lo studio di geometrie di piani che si sovrappongono e vanno a creare equilibri formali e cromatici.
Successivamente, queste geometrie vengono riportate su basi di alluminio e dipinte con campiture spray. È in questa fase che inizia l’uso di pellicole adesive cangianti, che vengono scelte a seconda della gradazione e della tonalità, applicate creando diversi livelli di saturazione di colore e di superfici specchianti. A questo punto viene applicata la pellicola dicroica trasparente, materiale in grado di mutare colore in base all’angolazione con cui la luce arriva dall’ambiente. Ultimo livello di finitura è la verniciatura a caldo con vernice epossidica trasparente lucida, che crea una superficie specchiante omogenea ed uniforme.
Il risultato è inatteso, seducente e spiazzante: i colori delle campiture variano a seconda della posizione da cui il visitatore osserva le opere. Si va a creare così un dialogo tra oggetto e osservatore, nel quale quest’ultimo viene trascinato dentro lo spazio dilatato dall’artista, nei suoi pezzi di questo mondo. I titoli di queste opere indicano l’ora e la data in cui Negri ha preso un appunto visivo (una fotografia scattata con il cellulare) di una situazione particolare in cui forme e luci interagivano in modo significativo. Cieli, montagne, fiumi e paesaggi in generale. Le singole opere cercano di evocare la poesia di quegli istanti, riproponendoli allo spettatore a distanza di mesi o anni in un contesto spaziale differente. Così le geometrie e le variazioni cromatiche che si attuano nello spazio della galleria mettono in relazione la memoria e lo scorrere del tempo.
In questa mostra, infine, Negri usa per la prima volta il linguaggio delle bandiere. Vessilli che, anziché rappresentare nazioni o regioni, riproducono le geometrie tipiche del suo linguaggio. L’installazione riproduce una sorta di ingresso di una sede diplomatica, dove sono esposte bandiere di paesi di fantasia, dei quali si può diventare liberi cittadini grazie all’immaginazione. Ancora una volta l’artista ci invita a fare parte della sua opera.
